How to Fix a Flat Tire on Your ATV

While riding your ATV, suddenly, your ATV tire can get a puncture. In most cases, we use our ATVs in challenging environments. Sharpe rocks, tree branches, nails, wires, and metal parts can be a reason for a flat tire. The problem begins here. What if it gets punched far away from your cab or farm? You can pull your ATV, but you know it is about an average of 500 pounds. It’s heavy-duty. Also, when you drive ATV while punctured, it can damage the rim and the vehicle. We all know the rim and wheel parts are more expensive.

What should you do now? Did you prepare for this situation? That’s why you need to know an easy fix for the ATV flat tire. As an ATV rider, you need a few items always with your ATV. A tire repair kit is the most important because the tire is the part that touches the ground all the time. You can also carry a 12v air compressor, side cutters, knife, toolkit, and winch. In this article, Today I will guide you on how to fix your ATV flat tire in 10 minutes. Keep reading manual riders!

What is the best way to fix ATV flat tire?

Here is the deal, we need to have a tire repair kit. We are going to use a plug, and it covers the puncture.

You can use this repair kit for ATVs, side-by-side, or dirt bikes. It’s not required to remove the tire from the vehicle. I’m always carrying this kit while I’m riding on my ATV. It helps me every time to fix a flat tire quickly.

Let’s see how to fix a flat tire step by step. Follow me.

  1. First, stop your ATV in a safe and flat area.
  2. Locate the flat tire and investigate the puncture. You can hear it or spray some water on the tire. When the air leaks, you can see water will make bubbles over the puncture hole.
  3. Clean around the puncture hole because we will add sealant cement to the puncher hole.
  4. Get a jagged tool and insert it into the tire from the puncture.
  5. Scrap the puncture area with the knife
  6. Apply the tire sealant.
  7. Get the plug and tool.
  8. Insert the plug into the puncher hole
  9. Now, the plug will stay in the hole. Carefully remove the tool.
  10. Use a CO2 cartridge to refill the tire or the air compressor to pump air to the tire.
  11. You can spray water on the puncher to check for any air leaks.
  12. Wait for a few minutes to set the sealant properly.
Found a video explaining these steps on youtube. Check it from here.

In these steps, you need a few things I mention above steps. Always take a tire plug and inflation kit with your ATV. Also, you can have an air pumper to put air into the tire. I know there is no place on ATV for the pumper. But you can keep it in your cab or car. In flat tires, you can use the co2 cartridge comes with a toolkit for a temporary solution. When you reach your cab, use the air pumper with the 12v out to refill the air in the ATV tire. Remember that when you use the plug on the tire, it can’t hold it forever.

You should check the tire before your ride because the plug can be damaged again. When you are available to replace the tire, do it asap. But if you are not a regular hard rider, the plug will cover your tire.

What if the tire gets punched on the sidewalls?

Tire sidewalls can be damaged while riding on rocky trails, trees, or branches. Sidewalls are weak because it’s not covered with thicker rubber than the bottom of the tire. You can follow the above steps when you get punched inside walls to repair it. But, it would be best if you replaced the tire because the sidewalls can get punched again in the hole. After all, it does not hold forever.

Is air leaking from the tire bead?

When your ATV tire gets a damaged rim, it can be the reason for the leak. So there are two options. If the rim has a big bend, I don’t think you can fix it. It will leak the air while riding your ATV if you fix it. So, replace your rim.

Use a dynaplug to repair ATV flat tire.

Dynaplug is a product you can use easily. The toolkit comes with three plugs, a reamer, and a case with a billet-aluminum applicator. New ATVs come with 12v out, and we can power up the kit. This kit will cost around $50-$60. this price will depend on the market, as usual.

Use a tireject tire sealant to repair ATV flat tire.

Also, Tireject is a product that you can use easily. The tireject kit costs less than $10 per tire and holds for 12 months. How its work? Easy, inject it into the tire and inflate. That’s it. You ready to go. Now the big guy comes. You can use a plug for the small puncture hole. But what about a big hole in the tire? Sadly, it can’t fix with the plug method. It would help if you replaced the tire in this case.

how do you stop atv tires from going flat

How do you stop ATV tires from going flat?

In most cases, tires get a puncture while riding on high air pressure on tires. Rocks can easily cut through the rubber when the tire has more pressure. So you should meantime your ATV tire pressure before you ride. An overinflated tire always causes the tire to puncture.

Be careful and keep an eye on the sharp obstacles.

Keep an eye on the road for sharper rocks or branches. So, Drive safely through those. Yea, I know you can’t do it all the time. I’m always drive my ATV slowly on the shaper rocks and obstacles. If we ride fast, it can cause a big puncture.

Maintain the ATV tire pressure regularly.

The best way to keep your ATV tires without puncture is to Maintain the tire pressure according to the riding environment. It always works with around 5-6psi for the ATV. Buy a tire repair kit and keep it always with your ATV. These two steps always help prevent your ATV from a flat tire. I recently wrote a complete Guide article about ATV tire pressure. you can read that article by clicking here.

Use a tube inside the ATV tire.

Our new ATVs use tubeless tires. But you can use a tube like an old ATV when your ATV gets a big puncture on a tire. The tube is a rubber thing, and the air goes inside. The tube is located inside the tire. Suppose the tire gets damaged, it’s not getting a puncture because the tube will cover the air. But tubeless tires and using tubes inside tires have some pros and cones. But if your tubeless tire gets a big puncture, you can use a tube instead of buying a new tire. It will save money from your pocket. Choose a tube size according to your ATV tires. The seller will guide you with the tube size when you buy tubes.

Upgrade to thick ATV tires From stock ATV tires

Another way you can buy thicker tires instead default tires come with the ATV. We can call them bulletproof tires. Mostly ATVs come with 4 or 6 ply thick tires. If you can spend some bucks for the tire upgrade, it can help you to finish the ride without getting a flat tire. Over time ATVs get heavy.

You can upgrade this tire to an 8 to 12 ply size range. In the past, Military vehicles used Thicker tires. Now they are available for your day-to-day vehicles. The thicker tire will price around $200 – $500, which can be changed with your choice and tire size.

Insert Slime into the ATV tire

You can buy Slime for the ATV tires. If you have a dirt bike, I know you will be familiar with Slime. It can insert inside the tire. Slime helps to keep the tire from small puncture holes. It cant have significant holes. You know what I mean. So small punctures can manage with Slime, but slight significant punctures can. Mostly Slime can use with paddle tires, which works great for me. No issue with other tires; Slime can use it with all other stock and 3rd party tires.

Use defenders inside ATV tire

Defenders are available for any ATV tire size. It goes inside the tire and can use with or without air on the tire. Standard 4×4 ATV or UTV tire needs 12 pieces. This defender comes like pieces, and it covers all the tires. You can buy a defender kit for your ATV one tire for around $120-$130 per kit.

Use a tire block sealant for ATV tires.

Tire blocks are very lightweight foam that covers all tires and wheels. When you use this foam, it doesn’t need any air. It seals the tire, and you no longer need to think about punctures or air pressure. You can buy tire block foam for around $120-$250.

Can you put Fix-a-Flat in a 4-wheeler tire?

Fix a flat is a specific mixture comes inside the air pressure can. The fix-a-flat official site recommends this product for automotive highway tires only. Fix-a-flat can’t be used on ATVs, UTVs, or dirk bikes.

The bottom line

Atv tires can get punctured while you ride on the obstacles. I hope you have a complete guide about fixing your ATV flat tire. But remember that after you repair the tire, monitor the tire pressure before the ride. It can keep you getting trouble during the journey. Keep the tire repair tool and portable air compressor with your ATV. Always keep your ATV clean, as I mention in every article. Last, happy riding manual riders!
