A winch is a necessary accessory for ATV, UTV, or any other off-road vehicle. While we ride on challenging trails, sometimes we need to use the winch to go through or help another rider. But what happens when the winch does not work as it is supposed?
Those who are more into hard work and adventure would go wild just by hearing winch is not working. But the issue is that many people need help figuring out what to do when the winch faces any problem. Today, I will answer the points you meet with the winch while offroading.
Why does the winch turn very slowly?
The winch turning slow is one of many people’s most common problems. There can be several reasons behind this issue. For example, motor damage can be a significant issue that can slow down the winch. Also, a bad connection between the cables and motor terminals can be an issue. So to fix this, you must find the problem that causes the winch to slow down and then find solutions.
Why does the winch motor get very hot quickly?
The high power consumption can be one of the reasons why the winch motor gets overheated or the inability of the engine to resist overheating. Dirty fan blades can also be one of the reasons that can cause the winch to overheat.
The inability to move air through the fan is the reason behind it. Further, if the heat sink is damaged, the winch can get extremely hot, which is harmful to the winch. Consider the Winch motor bushing gets tight than the recommended level. In that case, it can make unnecessary friction on the motor and produce heat. You can use sandpaper to sand the edge of the motor shaft and bushing. After sanding, the motor shaft and bushing will reduce friction.
Methods To Reduce Overheating Quickly
- Reducing the load of the weight of the winch is one of the things you can try when you load on it.
- You can shut down the engine to reduce the heat of the winch.
- Also, overheating the winch means it is time for the parts of the winch. If you do not consider this, the extreme heat might also affect the other factors.

Why does the ATV winch slip under load?
Many complain that the Atv winch slips or stops when they’re under load. The main reason is load in your winch has caused the winch to get stripped. You can fix this problem by disassembling the total winch and checking the problem in it. You should check out the gears too, and if there’s any problem, you have to either fix it or replace it.
Why won’t a winch go out?
There are instances where the winch won’t let out, and the reason for this is that the winch does not support the power. For this, you can carefully clean in front of the gear shifter and if you need to replace it, crack the new one open and silicone the seal if you don’t want this to happen again.
There are instances where the winch goes out but not in. at this point, you have to realize that the winch is not supported by the power there. You can try hitting the winch thrice; most of the time, it will start working again.
What should you do when a winch only works one way?
Many people complain that there are situations where the winch only works one way.
What causes a winch to only works one way?
Winches often work with dirt and mud, so there’s an excellent probability that the winch’s motor is stuck with dirt. So this causes the winch to perform only one way. Further, when the solenoids in the winch that provides current are not functioning well, the winch might not work both ways.
You can observe the wire connection in the winch. Check the wire line between the battery and the winch. You can wiggle the socket and tighten the joints on the wires. So try it out. A jumper cable test is also a good solution for solving this problem because, most of the time, the motor doesn’t fully break down; instead, it breaks down partially.
To find where the problem is, you can try a jumper cable test. Checking out the solenoids is also essential, as it can decide the function of the winch. So make sure that both solenoids work and connect correctly.
How to troubleshoot an ATV winch?
Troubleshooting a winch might differ according to the problem that the particular winch is having. We’ve addressed some of the questions that bothered you earlier. Before starting the next step, it is essential to mention that the winch is a complicated device that needs to be taken to a professional person to repair it.
How to Troubleshoot the winch When it is completely dead
To find a solution to repair when the winch is completely dead, you should first figure out whether the problem is in the winch or the wiring. For this, you can try out the Jumper cable test. The reason for this problem can be the blown fuse, or the circuit breaker tripped. Further, when the wiring is not connected correctly can also cause the winch to die completely.
What to check if the ATV winch motor is not working?
When you realize that the winch’s motor is not working, you should start checking the fuse or circuit breaker of the winch. Then you can check on the wire connections of the winch because, most often, faulty wires can cause the motor to malfunction. But,
How do you test a winch motor?
Here are the steps you should follow. This is Jumper Cable Test.
- Disconnect the wires of the winch
- Then Use Jump leads to connect the winch and the battery
- Connect the free ends of the wires
- Use the red cable to tap the other terminal of the winch
- If the drum of the winch does move, connect the red cable to the terminal
Can you bypass the solenoid on a winch?
Solenoid bypass is possible and is used to check whether the winch’s motor is functioning correctly.
Can you wire a winch directly to a battery?
The simple answer is yes, and it is possible to wire a winch directly to a battery. If the wires are long enough to plug into the battery terminal clamp bolts, you can do this.
Can you run a winch off a lithium battery?
Many professionals do not recommend lithium batteries for winches as they can be dangerous. It would be fine if lithium battery installed by professionals. Still, it’s better to avoid taking risks, even though I mentioned earlier. If you’re using a lithium battery, you need additional circuit protection devices to protect the winch and battery.
How much power is required to run ATV winch?
Generally, a 3500lb winch will require a standard 20A draw for no load, and a Standard full load draw can be 200A. You can check the Winch manual for your winch model’s specific power draw.
How to fix it when the ATV winch is stuck?
The solution might differ because the reason that made the winch stuck is different from one another. When the cable gets stuck between windings, you can overfill the winch’s cable on one side of the drum from winching at an angle.
Also, when the codes get undone due to the lack of tension, you can try the same method I recommended under the instance above. Further, you can fix the winch to free the spool while attaching the cable to a stationary object and then reverse the vehicle to add tension.

How to fix a broken ATV winch cable?
First, you must seize the ends of the broken cable. Subsequently, use wire rope clips to “turn” two interlocking eyes into the separated and held lots of the line. Then make a short slice in the cable.
Then you must seize every two strands at the ends to form three “super strands” around the core. Then cut the center back on each part to the point where all six strands get seized together. Then use a bench vise to create a standard short splice to connect the ends of the cable.
Do you need to lubricate a winch?
There can be problems in the winch that are not visible to the outside. You can lubricate the winch occasionally if it doesn’t show any concern.
Can a winch be rebuilt?
Most of the time, the winches are very durable, even though they need minor repairs from time to time. But with these small repairs, the winch can turn out your winch to be a brand new one.
The bottom line
So this is the end of exploring how to troubleshoot winches in most of the common problems you can face. Thanks for reading manual riders!
